For my first blog, I’ve decided to cover one of the challenges of entering the Daz Studio/Poser scene. This is getting used to all the different figures available and how they are compatible (or not compatible) with each other. So I decided to write this blog in the hopes that it will help out those who are new.

First, let’s determine some parameters to what will be covered. I will only be covering Daz figures. I lack Poser, so I don’t have posers figures so I won’t be talking about it’s specific figures. Most people stick to Daz figures anyway, even if they use Poser.4
One Piece Sport Swimsuit for Hivewire3D Dawn Figure Poser 3D clothes and clothing models, DAZ 3D, Hivewire3D, 3D figures and characters. Popular Clothing 3D mo. DAZ/POSER 3D MODELS 54.08 MB. Tilly is a lovely exotic character for Victoria 8. She comes with two different skin tones: a pale one and a darker one, like cafe latte. For extra convenience I have created a one click solution which applies the best combined eye shadow, lipstick and nail polish at once.
Daz Figures Generations:
Daz figures are divided into 7 different generations, usually the number of the generation is at the end of the name. For example, Victoria 4, Aiko 3, Michael 2. This holds true all the way to Generation 4. Generation 5 and on still use this naming scheme, but not quite in the same way. I’ll cover the change when I get to generation 5 and beyond.
Items for Specific Figures
Items that are specific per figure generally come in one of a few different categories. These are:
Morphs: Morphs are changes to the body of the character, also referred to as shapes. Generally morphs for one figure only work for that figure. There are ways around this I will talk about later.
Skins/Textures: These are materials for the specific figure, created using that figure’s specific UV (Unified Vector) map (Note: Genesis 3 doesn’t use UV maps). Some figures have UV maps built in for other figures.
Clothing: These are created per figure but in some cases can be used with others thanks to auto-fit and other methods. More on that later.
Poses: Poses are created on a per-figure basis but will at least work in some way on other characters. I’ll get into the specifics of that later.
Hair: Even though hair is generally designed for each figure, it’s usually a pretty easy task to reshape it for literally ANY other figure. Just make sure to parent it to the head.
The Generations:
Generations 1 + 2
These figures, mostly consisting of Millennium Man (Michael) and Millennium Woman (Victoria) and Victoria 2 and Michael 2. I won’t spend any real time on these because they are outdated and pretty much used very rarely. If props or hair are designed for these figures, they can be probably used with newer figures with some adjustments, but otherwise everything else is pretty incompatible.
Generation 3
Generation 3 is mostly in the position of being outdated and unused like Generations 1 and 2. The big exception to this rule is Aiko 3 (A3), the anime female. Aiko 3 is a special little gal that seems to live on because of her very stylized look. MCasual is a huge user of her and you check out his stuff, which includes scripts and plugins that are useful to everyone, at https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts/ With adjustments, you can use poses, hair and props that were designed for Generation 3 (mostly A3) with later figures. As for morphs, I’ll get into that later.
Generation 4
Generation 4 is the generation all other figures will be compared to. It’s very much Daz’s ‘greatest generation’ and one they are still trying to push users away from. Much of the reason for this is generation 4 was the last generation designed specifically for Poser. There is so much content out there for generation 4, especially Victoria, that you can nearly find anything imaginable. There are those who still swear by good ol’ Victoria 4 and Michael 4 (and to a lesser extent Aiko 4 (A4) and Hiro 4 (H4) Note: Hiro is the anime male and Aiko’s male equivalent). Speaking of H4 and A4, this is the first time (to my knowledge) Daz created these ‘bases’ as shapes for Victoria 4 and Michael 4. Same thing goes for Stephanie 4 (teenage female). Much of Generation 4 content is compatible with later Generations.

Generation 5
Generation 5 is where things get…different. Generation 5 consists of 1 figure and 1 figure only: Genesis. Genesis is unisex and can be morphed into male or female. Genesis is the first figure Daz decided to give away for free and eventually all the tools needed (sans 1) to make it compatible with Generation 4 content. Genesis is the base figure. Victoria 5, Michael 5, Aiko 5 etc are all shapes for Genesis, some of which have their own UV maps. Out of box, Genesis is compatible with most generation 4 content, the only exception being morphs. It can use clothing and hair via the autofit tool. Just find the piece of clothing in your poser runtime, make sure Genesis is selected, double click. Answer the questions on the dialog box, like what figure is the item for and what kind of item it is and usually the item fits pretty well. Poses really only require slight adjustments and ShareCG.com has scripts available to help with that.
Generation 6
Generation 6 is very similar to Generation 5 in the sense that V6, M6 etc are shapes for it… but it is once again divided into different male and female basis. And it’s still free. So we have Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male. Out of the box, the only figures Genesis 2 male and female are compatible with are each other and Genesis. There are plenty of products out there that make it compatible generation 4 figures and I very much suggest those products. I’ll talk about a lot of those at the end the blog.
Generation 7
Generation 7 is a new standard for Daz. It is the newest of the new, so to speak. There isn’t even a male for it yet. So all we have is Genesis 3 Female. Also free like the other Genesis figures. She new and shiny, but the fact is, she’s not very compatible. In fact, that’s actually the point. She uses a completely new texturing system, which means none of your old textures are compatible. She has many more bones so that means none of your old poses will work without being converted by a plugin. She can wear Genesis 2 clothing out of the box, but that’s it. There isn’t even a plugin for the Generation X2 plugin to transfer shapes (even though it’s still possible). My verdict on her is to wait. Wait until someone finds an automatic way to use prior generations skins. She’ll be great to use one day, but I feel it just isn’t worth throwing out all your old content to do it.
So…what do we do this things info? Let’s review:
Generation 1 + 2
Every figure is it’s own figure (V1, M1)
Only hair and poses (maybe) are compatible with later generations.
Generation 3
Every figure is it’s own figure (V3,A3,M3)
Only hair and poses are compatible with later generations.
Generation 4
Victoria 4 and Micheal 4 are the ‘bases’ for the other characters (Aiko 4, Hiro 4 etc).
Most items are usable with later generations, either with plugins, autofit clones and simple adjustments.
Generation 5
Can use most generation 4 content out of the box, except morphs.
Generation 6
Can use most generation 5 content out of the box, except morphs.

Awesome Compatibility products
I’m going to talk about the best ways to make Genesis 2 Female as compatible as possible.
Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female
Since Generation 6 is my generation of choice, this is a must have. What this product does is give Genesis 2 Female V4’s UV maps, shape and autofit clone. There are other ways to convert V4 clothing to Genesis 2 female, but this is the most convenient. These scripts are particularly helpful when loading V4 materials on to G2F: http://www.sharecg.com/v/70109/browse/8/Script/Genesis1-surfaces-for-G2F-and-vice-versa
Generation X2
I cannot stress how much this product helps. It gives you the ability to take shapes from older figures (starting with Generation 3) and move them to newer figures. All you need to have is the figure your transferring from and to, Generation X2 and the proper plugins. Note: there is no Genesis 3 plugin yet, the author is waiting for the release of Genesis 3 Male to release it.
V4 Poser Converter for Genesis and Genesis 2 Female
This is a great plugin that can literally convert 1000’s of (freely available) poses to Genesis and Genesis 2 Female. Works fairly well and saves tons of time.
Daz Studio Posing Scripts
These scripts are great too if you don’t want to spend the money on the pose converter and they support more than just V4.
Handy Dandy
Helps you fix hand issues when using poses with older figures. Great product.
Sickle Dress Rig for Genesis 2 Female
This another one I’m a huge fan of. It allows you to autofit a dress with 4 movement handles. Otherwise the dress just moves with the pose and has some ugly results. This works with dresses and skirts (sometimes even other things like capes) from any figure you can autofit from. Sickle Yield has made a similar and more comprehensive product for Genesis 3 http://www.daz3d.com/sy-ultra-templates-for-genesis-3-female-s
Genesis 3 Female for Genesis 2 Female
I can’t attest for this product’s quality since I don’t have it, but if you want to g2f to wear stuff for g3f this is one route. Another way is to create your own autofit clone, but I’ve lost the link to the forum post, so I’ll add it when I find it.
Conclusion
I hope this covers enough to you started and enough compatibility tools to help you choose the figure that’s best for you. I really suggest using Genesis 2. It has great weight mapping, so the figure’s body reacts to how it’s posed and it can be made heavily compatible with nearly all the other figures. But, in the end, the choice is yours. Choose your weapon wisely. If I’ve left out some good tools or something about this article is off, let me know in the comments below! Or, you could tell me how awesome the post is, but that’s your call lol.
